IFM PN2293 Electronic Pressure Sensor with Display – Robust Vacuum and Low-Pressure Control for Industrial Automation

The IFM PN2293 is an electronic pressure sensor with an integrated digital display, designed for reliable monitoring of vacuum and low positive pressure in demanding industrial environments. With a measuring range from -1…25 bar (-14.5…362 psi), it covers typical compressed air circuits, low-pressure hydraulic systems and vacuum applications in one compact device.

Built around a ceramic-capacitive measuring cell and a stainless-steel housing, the PN2293 combines mechanical robustness, high measurement accuracy and flexible output options. Users can access two programmable switching outputs and one analogue output (4…20 mA or 0…10 V), while protection features such as short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection help maximise service life in harsh control cabinets and on-machine installations.

Measuring principle and mechanical design

At the core of the PN2293 is a ceramic-capacitive measuring cell. This technology relies on a ceramic diaphragm that deflects slightly under pressure; the capacitance change is converted into a stable electrical signal. Compared with purely metallic diaphragms, ceramic cells offer excellent corrosion resistance for many media, high overload capability and low hysteresis over millions of cycles.

The wetted components – stainless steel, ceramic and FKM – are selected to handle common industrial fluids such as compressed air, non-aggressive gases, hydraulic oils and many water-based media. This combination allows the PN2293 to be used across pneumatic manifolds, cooling circuits, lubrication systems and vacuum lines without requiring multiple sensor types.

Mechanically, the sensor is built in a cylindrical threaded housing with a 1/4" NPT process port, making it compatible with standard fittings used in North American and many global installations. The sensor is specified with a proof pressure far above its nominal measuring range, which helps it survive fast transients and pressure spikes that occur during valve switching or pump start-up.

Display, user interface and status indication

On the front, the PN2293 includes a four-digit LED display that shows the current process value in bar, psi or MPa depending on configuration. The display provides clear numeric indication even in bright factory lighting, enabling technicians to check system pressure at a glance without connecting external gauges.

Below or beside the display, status LEDs indicate the switching state of the outputs. Combined with the numeric value, this visual feedback helps users quickly understand whether the system is within the allowable pressure window or approaching a limit.

Local pushbuttons (on the sensor head) are used for parameterisation. With these keys, users can configure:

  • Switch and reset points for each digital output (hysteresis or window mode).

  • Switching logic (normally open or normally closed).

  • The analogue output type (current or voltage) and scaling of the output range.

  • Units and display orientation, so the reading is easy to view after installation.

This on-device configuration avoids the need for special handheld tools in many applications and makes field adjustments straightforward during commissioning or service work.

Output configuration and integration into control systems

Electrically, the PN2293 is designed to be versatile in both simple and advanced control architectures. According to distributor data, it provides two digital outputs plus one analogue output, with the digital outputs configurable as PNP or NPN and as normally open or normally closed.

The analogue channel can be set to 4…20 mA or 0…10 V DC, which allows integration with a wide variety of PLC input modules, analogue indicators and data acquisition systems. The ability to scale the analogue range within the full measuring span enables better resolution around the operating point, improving control performance in closed-loop pressure regulation.

Important protection features – short-circuit protection, overload monitoring and reverse-polarity protection – are built in, reducing the risk of sensor damage caused by incorrect wiring or unexpected load conditions during installation and operation.

In addition to operating as a traditional switch/transmitter, the PN2293 is listed among products complying with IO-Link / IEC 61131-9, which indicates availability of IO-Link functionality in this family. When used with an IO-Link master, it can provide digital process values and diagnostic data and support central parameter management – useful in modern, networked machine concepts.

An M12 4-pin industrial connector is used for the electrical interface, allowing quick connection and replacement using standard sensor cables.

Environmental performance and protection

For on-machine installation, the PN2293 offers environmental ratings of IP65 and IP67, provided a suitable mating connector is used. This ensures resistance to dust ingress and protection against water jets or temporary immersion, which are common in production lines, packaging machines and assembly systems.

The operating temperature range from around -25 to 80 °C covers typical indoor industrial environments, including areas with moderate heating or cooling and those with fluctuating ambient conditions. The combination of temperature resistance, mechanical shock and vibration robustness – as indicated by the conformity to several IEC and EN test standards – supports long service life in applications where the sensor is mounted directly on pumps, compressors or moving machine parts.

Typical applications of IFM PN2293

Thanks to its measuring range and vacuum capability, the PN2293 can be used in a wide spectrum of systems, for example:

  • Vacuum handling and pick-and-place systems
Monitoring vacuum levels in suction cup circuits to confirm that parts are securely held before motion starts. If pressure rises above a defined limit (indicating a leak or missing part), a switching output can immediately trigger an alarm or stop signal.

  • Compressed air distribution and preparation units
Supervising pressure downstream of filters, regulators and dryers to ensure consistent supply to actuators and tools. The analogue signal can be used for energy monitoring or compressed-air efficiency analysis.

  • Cooling and lubrication systems
Controlling pressure in coolant lines or lubrication circuits for machine tools, forming machines and packaging equipment. The PN2293 helps verify that pumps are delivering sufficient pressure and that filters are not clogged.

  • Low-pressure hydraulic applications
Measuring pressure in auxiliary hydraulic functions or low-pressure circuits where the range up to 25 bar is sufficient and a compact sensor is preferred over high-pressure transmitters.

  • General OEM machine building
Standardising on the PN2293 across multiple machine types reduces spare-part variants and simplifies design. Different roles (limit switch, transmitter, IO-Link device) can be covered using one sensor type simply through parameter changes.

Benefits for machine builders and end users

For OEMs, the PN2293 offers a single, configurable platform that can replace separate mechanical gauges, pressure switches and simple transmitters in many low-pressure and vacuum applications. Fewer device variants reduce design time, documentation workload and inventory complexity.

End users benefit from:

  • Clear on-site indication via the LED display, supporting fast troubleshooting.

  • Flexible integration through dual switching outputs and a scalable analogue channel.

  • Robust construction that tolerates pressure peaks, electrical faults and harsh environmental conditions.

  • Long-term reliability due to ceramic-capacitive technology, stainless-steel housing and comprehensive protection features.

Summary

The IFM PN2293 electronic pressure sensor with display is a versatile solution for monitoring vacuum and low positive pressure in industrial automation. Its -1…25 bar measuring range, ceramic-capacitive cell, stainless-steel construction, dual switching outputs and scalable analogue output make it a strong choice for pneumatic, cooling, lubrication and auxiliary hydraulic systems. In applications that demand compact size, clear local indication and reliable, long-term performance, the PN2293 provides a practical and cost-effective pressure sensing platform.
