وصف المنتج

The SMC D-M9B is a solid state auto switch used to detect the position of a pneumatic cylinder piston (or slide/table) that contains a built-in magnet. In automation terms, it is a compact, non-contact “end-of-stroke confirmation” device: when the magnetic field from the piston passes the sensing point, the switch output changes state and your PLC or relay circuit gets a clean signal that motion has reached the intended location.

SMC’s D-M9 series is widely used because it combines small size, simple mounting, and an electrical interface that is friendly to common industrial control systems. The D-M9B specifically is the 2-wire type with an in-line wiring entry direction (the cable exits in-line with the body), which tends to simplify routing when sensors are mounted along long cylinder bodies or in compact tooling where perpendicular wiring would interfere with guards or brackets.

What problem it solves in real machines

In the real world, pneumatic cylinders do not come with built-in “position certainty.” Air compresses, loads vary, and operators bump fixtures. If your machine sequence depends on “Cylinder A is fully extended before Cylinder B clamps,” you need a sensor that reports the piston’s position reliably. D-M9B does exactly that: it converts the presence of a piston magnet into a usable electrical signal so you can:

  • Confirm extend/retract completion before the next step

  • Interlock motion for safety logic (for example, “guard closed” or “stopper engaged” signals)

  • Count cycles and detect abnormal delays (basic predictive maintenance)

  • Troubleshoot issues quickly (sticking cylinder, low pressure, misalignment)

Because it is solid state, it avoids mechanical contact wear associated with reed switches in some high-cycle applications, while still staying small and easy to mount.

Core Specifications and Electrical Behavior (why 2-wire matters)

The D-M9B is a 2-wire solid state switch. “2-wire” means it is wired in series with the load, using only signal and common lines. This is convenient for simple wiring, but it also creates two behaviors you should design for:

  1. Internal voltage drop when ON
In the D-M9B family specs, internal voltage drop is listed as 4 V or less.
In practice, that means your load (PLC input, relay coil input circuit, etc.) will see a slightly reduced voltage when the switch is ON. Most modern PLC inputs tolerate this easily, but it is worth remembering in low-margin circuits.

  2. Leakage current when OFF
Leakage current is listed as 0.8 mA or less for this family.
Leakage current is a small current that flows even when the switch is OFF (a normal characteristic of many 2-wire solid state sensors). If your PLC input is ultra-sensitive, leakage current can sometimes make the input look “half-on.” In those rare cases, engineers either choose a different input type, add a bleeder resistor, or use a 3-wire switch model.

For typical automation hardware, the D-M9B is commonly specified for 24 VDC relay and PLC usage, with a power supply listed as 24 VDC (10 to 28 VDC) and a current consumption range of 2.5 to 40 mA.
An indicator LED (red) lights when the switch is ON, which is extremely useful during commissioning and fault-finding.

Installation notes that prevent the usual “why is my sensor flaky” problem

1) Mount it at the most sensitive position

Every cylinder has a “sweet spot” where the magnetic field is strongest for the sensor. The catalog drawings mark a most sensitive position for correct adjustment.
In practice: slide the sensor along the switch groove until the LED behavior is stable at the end position, then tighten.

2) Use the correct mounting screw

SMC cautions to fix the auto switch using the screw installed on the switch body; using a different screw can damage the switch.
That warning is not decorative. Auto switches are small, and over-length screws can crack housings or stress internal components.

3) Design with 2-wire characteristics in mind

If you are feeding a PLC input:

  • Confirm the input’s ON threshold will still be satisfied with the switch’s internal voltage drop.

  • Confirm the OFF state remains OFF despite leakage current (rare for modern PLC inputs, but worth knowing).

If those constraints are not acceptable, the same D-M9 family includes 3-wire NPN/PNP options with different electrical behavior.

Summary

The SMC D-M9B is a compact, industrial-grade 2-wire solid state auto switch designed to provide reliable piston-position feedback for magnet-equipped pneumatic actuators. Its in-line wiring helps in tight layouts, the red LED indicator speeds up commissioning, and its electrical ratings align with standard 24 VDC PLC/relay control systems.
